parents consent to 16-year-old marriage


40-Year-Old Former Teacher Marries 16-Year-Old Student. kid's parents actually signed a marriage consent form. the shame. I don't care how miserable my kid was making me or how much she was ignoring me. no way on god's green earth would I give my 16-year-old daughter permission to marry anyone. I find this story so disturbing. why can't legal charges be brought against him? they were shtupping and romantically engaged when he was her coach. the shame.

Age of consent in Ontario, Canada is 14. Upon reaching this level of suffrage, whether god's earth be green or fuscia, a mother's wise counsel would have no consequence.

Strange. Also maddening is that in some places (some countries and some US states I think) the age of consent for boy/girl is 16, whereas for same-sex couples it's 18. WTF with that?

Oh, and I hose my couch down every day - how did they know???

The horror expressed by some otherwise liberal people over this story is confusing and illogical.

Let's say these two were having sex before marriage and she got pregnant. Then lets say she, a 16 year old girl, wanted an abortion. All the liberals would think that's ok, in fact it's a fundamental right - parental consent be damned.

But here, a 16 year old gets married with her parents say so and it's supposed to be tragic? I'm not sure what the problem is. If you don't support the idea of abstinence for unmarried teenagers, why do you get upset when they then get married and want to have "legit" sex? One would think you'd support her choice if in fact you support her right to choose what to do with her body.

Moreover, if this were a 40 year old gay man and a 16 year old boy in Massachusetts who wanted to get married, the attitudes from everyone here would be MUCH different indeed. I'm giving that situation only about another five years to develop. Then what will you say? (BTW, age of consent is 16 in MA also)

SPEAKING OF ABORTIONS

Menses just commenced. It's 1:14 AM. I was asleep. That felt good. At 12:24, I popped up. I think I'm awake, maybe awakeish is more accurate. I'm always surprised when those handy-soapy-foamy-bottles run out of soap. For some lame ass reason, it never occurs to me that they ever will. They feel so lifetime supply , even though the bottles aren't more than 8 inches tall. Similarly, when I flip on a light switch and the light flickers to its death, I think "Now what?" Duh, schmuckette, you change the fucking light bulb . Intellectually, I know this, yet for some odd reason, it never comes to mind. Have you seen the infomercial for Get Listen Up ? I thought the idea of a product that turns "Ordinary hearing into Extroidinary hearing" was too camp for words. In the mersh, a hospitable narrator takes you through all kinds of folks using it in church, hunting, watching television, listening to your spawn on the playground, all doable, right? Right.
